First on the list is Beethoven’s mother, Maria Magdalena Keverich. Born in Ehrenbreitstein (now part of Koblenz), she moved to Bonn after marrying Johann van Beethoven. Despite her husband’s alcoholism and financial instability, she managed to raise their children with resilience. Her son Ludwig van Beethoven became one of the most famous composers in history.
Next up is Clara Schumann – one of the leading pianists during the Romantic era. Born Clara Wieck ladies in Bonn 1819, she moved to Bonn after marrying Robert Schumann. Known for her exceptional performing talent which was nurtured from an early age by her father Friedrich Wieck, Clara was also a composer who pushed boundaries at a time when women were seldom recognized for such achievements.

Thirdly there’s Hannelore Kraft who served as Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2010 until 2017 – making her the first woman to hold this office. She studied economics at the University of Bonn before entering politics as a member of Social Democratic Party (SPD).
Another notable woman linked with Bonn is Dr Ruth Pfau; although not born here, this German physician dedicated more than half-century treating leprosy patients in Pakistan after being inspired by her medical studies at Mainz and Marburg Universities near Bonn.
Finally we have Antje Vollmer – theologian turned politician who served as Vice President of Bundestag from 1994 till 2005 representing Alliance ’90/The Greens party. A graduate from Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Bonn, she was instrumental in shaping Germany’s Green party as a significant political force.
